Rajapuri — Pineapple Sweetness
Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Rajapuri'
Rajapuri is the productive one. Where other varieties might give you a modest harvest, Rajapuri goes into production and does not stop. Pineapple-like sweetness with very juicy flesh. The tree itself is vigorous and beautiful, making a real statement in the garden or greenhouse.
NZ Suitability
Why it grows here: Rajapuri is grown commercially in Maharashtra and Karnataka — also widely grown across central and western India. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.
Best NZ regions: Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne in warm sheltered spots. One of the more robust varieties for NZ outdoor growing.
Greenhouse: Not essential in northern NZ warm spots. Rajapuri is one of the best performers for outdoor growing in NZ's suitable regions.
Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.
Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.
Flavour Experience
Rajapuri has a distinctive pineapple-like sweetness — tropical, bright and very juicy. The flesh is plentiful, juicy and melting with moderate tang. The flavour is crowd-pleasing and generous — this is the variety you share with everyone because there is always more than enough.
Health Benefits
Rich in vitamins C and A, potassium and antioxidants. Exceptional productivity means more fresh mango available for longer. Very good disease resistance means a healthy, vigorous plant that produces reliably.
Fruiting in New Zealand
Rajapuri flowers August–October and fruits January–April in NZ. Often fruiting within 2–4 years from planting — one of the earlier trees to come into production. Very reliable flowering and fruiting once established.
Growing Notes from Ben
Plan for the harvest. Rajapuri is genuinely productive — when it comes into full production you will have more mangoes than you expect. Share them, process them, sell them.
Vigorous grower — prune regularly. Regular tipping and pruning is essential to keep it manageable. An unpruned Rajapuri will get very large very quickly.
Wind shelter. Protect from strong winds especially during flowering August–October.
