Chausa — Cold-hardy, Delicious & Very Juicy
Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Chausa'
Chausa has a devoted following across northern India and Pakistan. Simply one of the juiciest mangoes that exists — the flesh is so soft and liquid-rich that eating one is more like drinking it. Melon, custard and honey are the flavour notes most commonly described.
NZ Suitability
Why it grows here: Chausa is grown commercially in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana — grown across the northern plains including colder-winter regions. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.
Best NZ regions: Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne in a warm sheltered spot. One of the better candidates for outdoor growing in NZ.
Greenhouse: A greenhouse improves results but Chausa is one of the more adaptable varieties for outdoor growing in northern NZ.
Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.
Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.
Flavour Experience
Chausa is defined by juice volume and sweetness. The flesh almost dissolves rather than chews. Flavour notes of melon, custard and honey with almost no tang — pure sweetness. The aroma is deep, sweet and floral. One of the great indulgent mango experiences.
Health Benefits
High in natural sugars, vitamin C and beta-carotene. The exceptional juice volume means a concentrated hit of vitamins and antioxidants. Rich in potassium and mangiferin antioxidants.
Fruiting in New Zealand
Chausa flowers August–October in NZ and fruits February–April. Being from the northern plains of India where winters are cold, it adapts well to NZ's seasonal pattern.
Growing Notes from Ben
Sun and shelter. Full sun, north-facing position with protection from wind. Chausa rewards warm conditions with exceptional juice quality.
Wind shelter important. Sensitive to strong winds during flowering. A sheltered position protects flower clusters and improves fruit set.
