Neelam — The Late Season Mango

Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Neelam'

Neelam is the late-season mango — while other varieties finish in March, Neelam keeps producing into April and May. This alone makes it worth including in any collection. Also one of the most disease-resistant mangoes available, with a distinctive spicy-floral aroma that sets it apart.

Extends your mango season. Late-season variety that produces when others are finishing. Spicy floral aroma, bright refreshing flavour and outstanding disease resistance.

NZ Suitability

Why it grows here: According to the Himichal Pradesh Biodiversity Board, maintained neelam mango trees are present in the low hills and valleys of Himichal Pradesh. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.

Best NZ regions: Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne in warm sheltered spots. Pan-India adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of NZ conditions.

Greenhouse: Not essential in northern NZ warm spots. Excellent disease resistance makes Neelam a lower-maintenance variety.

Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.

Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.

Flavour Experience

Neelam has a distinctive spicy-floral aroma — different from the rich dessert sweetness of Alphonso or the herbal complexity of Langra. The flavour is bright and refreshing with a pleasant tang that balances the sweetness. Flesh is smooth and juicy. The most refreshing mango on this list.

Health Benefits

Rich in vitamins C and A with excellent antioxidant content. The spicy aromatic compounds — terpenes and esters — contribute to both flavour and nutritional interest. Outstanding disease resistance means a healthy, vigorous plant.

Fruiting in New Zealand

Neelam flowers September–November — later than most varieties — and fruits March–May. This later season is one of its great practical advantages. Grown pan-India, it adapts well to NZ's range of conditions.

Growing Notes from Ben

Adaptable and disease resistant. Neelam is one of the easier mangoes to manage — excellent disease resistance, good adaptability and reliable production.

Wind shelter. Protect from strong winds especially during the later flowering window September–November.

Great pollinator. Neelam is widely noted as a good pollinator for other mango varieties. Including Neelam in the mix benefits the whole collection.
