Dasheri — The Aromatic Mango of Lucknow
Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Dasheri'
Dasheri is the mango of Lucknow and one of the most widely grown varieties across the northern plains of India. Beloved for its distinctive floral honey aroma and smooth, creamy fiberless flesh. The balance of sweetness and gentle tang makes it endlessly approachable.
NZ Suitability
Why it grows here: Dasheri is grown commercially in Uttar Pradesh — the Lucknow region, and across the northern plains. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.
Best NZ regions: Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne in a warm sheltered spot. Good cold tolerance from its northern India origin.
Greenhouse: A greenhouse improves results but not essential in northern NZ warm spots. From the cold-winter northern plains of India, Dasheri handles NZ winters well.
Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.
Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.
Flavour Experience
Dasheri is defined by its aroma — floral, honey, fragrant and complex. The flesh is smooth and creamy with good sweetness balanced by a gentle tang. More complexity than Alphonso but in a very pleasant, approachable way. Fiberless flesh that melts cleanly.

Good source of vitamins C and A, potassium and dietary antioxidants. The moderate sweetness makes Dasheri one of the more balanced mangoes nutritionally.
Fruiting in New Zealand
Dasheri flowers August–October in NZ and fruits January–March. From the cold-winter northern plains of India, it is adapted to a seasonal climate similar to NZ's.

Adaptable but appreciates warmth. Northern India origin means Dasheri handles NZ winters better than many varieties. Still wants the warmest, sunniest spot available.
