Cheruku Rasalu — The Sweeter Rasalu

Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Cheruku Rasalu'

Cheruku Rasalu is the sweeter partner to Peda Rasalu. "Cheruku" means sugarcane in Telugu, which tells you everything about the sweetness intensity. Like Peda Rasalu, you squeeze it, make a hole at the stalk end, and drink — like the most extraordinary mango juice you have ever tasted, fresh from the fruit itself.

Sugarcane sweetness. Cheruku means sugarcane in Telugu — that is the sweetness level we are talking about. Squeeze, drink, be amazed. A heated greenhouse makes this extraordinary variety possible in NZ.

NZ Suitability

Why it grows here: Cheruku Rasalu is grown commercially in Andhra Pradesh — warm lowland tropical variety requiring sustained heat. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.

Best NZ regions: Not recommended for outdoor growing in NZ. Heated greenhouse essential.

Greenhouse: Heated greenhouse essential. Do not allow temperature below 10°C at any time. From warm lowland Andhra Pradesh — needs sustained tropical warmth.

Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.

Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.

Flavour Experience

Cheruku Rasalu is sweeter than Peda Rasalu — if that seems impossible, taste them side by side. The juice is extraordinarily sweet with complex aromatic depth. Like Peda Rasalu, it is consumed by squeezing and drinking. A once-in-a-lifetime food experience for most NZ growers.

Health Benefits

Very high natural sugar content. Rich in vitamins C and A, potassium and antioxidants in liquid form. The juice delivery method means maximum extraction of nutrients from the fruit.

Fruiting in New Zealand

In a heated greenhouse, Cheruku Rasalu can flower July–September and fruit December–March. Sustained warmth above 10°C is essential. Cannot tolerate cold at any stage.

Growing Notes from Ben

Heated greenhouse is non-negotiable. Requires sustained heat above 10°C year-round. A heated greenhouse is essential for NZ growing.

Pair with Peda Rasalu. The two varieties complement each other perfectly — different sweetness profiles, same consumption method.

The consumption method is important. Squeeze gently, make a small hole at the stalk end, drink directly. Do not slice and eat like a normal mango.

Patient investment. Cheruku Rasalu in a heated greenhouse is a long-term commitment — but the payoff is access to one of the most extraordinary fruit experiences available anywhere.
