Banganapalli — The Golden Mango of Andhra Pradesh
Latin name: Mangifera indica cv. 'Banganapalli'
Banganapalli — also known as Safeda — is one of the most widely grown commercial mangoes in Andhra Pradesh. Large, golden-yellow fruit with firm, juicy flesh and a clean, uncomplicated sweetness. The mango you cut into neat slices and serve at the table.
NZ Suitability
Why it grows here: Banganapalli is grown commercially in Andhra Pradesh — a warm lowland variety from southern India. The climate logic that makes mango growing possible in those regions — warm summers, defined seasons, cooler winters — applies directly to New Zealand's northern regions.
Best NZ regions: Northland in the warmest sheltered spots only. Auckland and south require greenhouse.
Greenhouse: Greenhouse recommended across most of NZ. From warm lowland Andhra Pradesh, it appreciates more heat than NZ typically provides outdoors.
Wind shelter: All mangoes prefer shelter from strong winds — particularly during flowering when wind causes flower drop and reduces fruit set. A sheltered north-facing position is ideal. Young trees especially benefit from wind protection while establishing.
Frost: Can handle mild occasional frost when mature. Recommend frost protection when young.
Flavour Experience
Banganapalli is clean, straightforward and satisfying — sweet with a mild pleasant tang. Firm yet melting, juicy and golden-yellow. Not as intensely aromatic as Alphonso but deeply satisfying eating. A crowd-pleaser.
Health Benefits
Rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. Good source of dietary fibre, potassium and antioxidants. Significantly more nutritious than commercially grown varieties commonly available in NZ.
Fruiting in New Zealand
In a greenhouse, Banganapalli can flower July–September and fruit January–March. It needs sustained warmth — a heated greenhouse ensures reliable results. Outdoors in Northland results are variable.
Growing Notes from Ben
Warmth is the priority. From warm lowland Andhra Pradesh — a greenhouse is the most reliable approach in NZ.
Wind shelter essential. Protect from strong winds at all times — particularly during flowering.
Large tree. Vigorous grower — plan for regular pruning. Tipping from an early age is essential to build a productive contained structure.

Common Questions
Does it need a greenhouse? Recommended for most of NZ. Northland warm spots may manage outdoors in good years.
Frost tolerance? Less cold-tolerant than northern Indian varieties. Protect from any frost.
When will it fruit? 3–6 years from planting in good conditions.
How big does it get? Vigorous grower — regular pruning keeps it at 3–5m.
