From BensGarden | 48 Years Growing Tropical Fruit in Aotearoa
We're pleased to release our comprehensive Mango Growing Guide for New Zealand conditions. This guide covers everything from planting through to your first harvest, with techniques adapted from successful growers worldwide and tailored specifically for our climate.
WHAT YOU'RE GROWING
Our mango collection features seedling varieties selected for their ability to handle New Zealand conditions. Most of our range comes from northern India where winter means jackets and temperatures that would make many tropical plants uncomfortable. These aren't the tender varieties that sulk in anything less than perfect heat.
Seedling vs Grafted: Your tree is grown from seed. This means you'll wait 5-8 years for first fruit, or 3 years in a greenhouse. But you'll also get a vigorous, deep-rooted tree that handles our climate well.
KEY GROWING PRINCIPLES
We're now leaning towards the philosophy and approach of some key growers in Florida – particularly on tipping (pruning) and very low nitrogen fertilization. This produces compact, highly productive trees ideal for home orchards and small commercial operations.
Essential practices:
- Tip regularly (every 50cm of growth) to encourage branching
- Keep nitrogen LOW – especially during flowering and fruiting
- Focus on leaf growth, not timber (wood)
- Maintain manageable height (2-3m ideal for NZ conditions)
- Big tree with lots of wood means little or no fruit
- Manageable size tree with maximum tips produces lots of fruit
LOCATION & SPACING
Sun requirements: Full sun to partial shade. Some midday shade helpful to prevent leaf scorch in hot conditions. Consider 20-30% shadecloth if planting in very exposed positions.
Commercial orchard spacing we recommend:
- 3m between trees (in rows)
- 3-4m between rows
- This encourages trees to stay compact (2-3m height)
- Easier management, better light penetration, higher yields
THE CRITICAL FERTILIZING RULE
VERY LOW NITROGEN
Don't use uncomposted animal manure or garden waste. Minimize nitrogen to encourage flowering and fruiting, not excessive vegetative growth.
During flowering and fruiting: ZERO nitrogen. Nitrogen during this time reduces fruit set. Use potassium and micronutrients only.
TIPPING & TRAINING
What is tipping? Removing the growing tip (terminal bud) to force lateral branch development.
How often: Every 50cm of vertical growth, starting in the first year and continuing for life of tree.
Why it matters: Creates compact, bushy tree with more flowering points, easier management and harvest, better light penetration, and keeps height manageable at 2-3m.
TIMELINE TO FIRST FRUIT
Seedling mangoes:
- Year 1-2: Establishment, vegetative growth
- Year 3: Continued growth, early structure
- Year 4: First flowering likely
- Year 5+: First significant harvest
Yes, it's a longer wait than papaya. But you'll have a productive tree for 20-50+ years.
VARIETIES WE SUPPLY
Kesar: Northern India origin, excellent NZ performer, disease-resistant
Other varieties: Alphonso, Chausa, Dasheri, Himayat, Himsagar, Langra, Neelam, Payri, Totapuri are selected for ability to handle cooler conditions.
Note: Banganapalli and Mallika may be exceptions – slightly more heat-loving.
