Mangoes in NZ Greenhouses

Is a greenhouse necessary? Is it worth it? And is it possible to recreate conditions that are actually better than where mangoes naturally grow?

The Questions Worth Asking

Do I need a greenhouse?

For most outside varieties in Northland and Auckland — no. For Himiyat, Banganapalli, Peda Rasalu and Cheruku Rasalu — yes, a greenhouse makes a significant difference or is essential.

Is it worth it?

A well-managed greenhouse can extend what's possible in NZ significantly. It's not just about protection — it's about creating conditions where a mango can actually thrive, not just survive.

Can we beat India's climate?

In some respects, surprisingly yes. A controlled greenhouse in NZ can provide more consistent conditions than the variable monsoon climate mangoes experience in parts of India.

What does a mango actually prefer?

Mangoes prefer a dry winter rest period, a hot dry flowering season, and a warm humid fruiting period. NZ's wet winters are the main challenge — a greenhouse addresses this directly.

Temperature Comparison

Understanding what mangoes actually experience — in India, outside in NZ, and in a managed NZ greenhouse — changes the conversation.

India (Mango Regions)

15–45°C
Winter 15-25°C dry. Summer 35-45°C with humidity. Variable monsoon season.

NZ Outside (Northland)

5–32°C
Winter 5-15°C with rain. Summer 22-32°C. Cold southerlies a significant factor.

NZ Greenhouse (Managed)

10–38°C
Winter 10-20°C controlled. Summer 28-38°C with ventilation. Humidity manageable.
The Key Insight The problem isn't just NZ's cold winters — it's the wet. Mangoes naturally experience a dry winter rest in India. A NZ greenhouse provides that dry period even when it's raining outside, which can actually be closer to ideal mango conditions than an exposed NZ position.

The Overheating Problem

⚠ Less than 1% of NZ greenhouses are properly managed for heat On a bright sunny day with windows closed, 52°C inside a greenhouse is common. Even with windows open but poor airflow, 44°C is typical. At these temperatures, mangoes shut down, stress, and become vulnerable to disease. This is the number one problem with growing tropical fruit in NZ greenhouses.

The solution isn't a bigger greenhouse or a different structure — it's proper ventilation design. Roll-up sides, ridge vents, thermostatically controlled exhaust fans, and good orientation all make a dramatic difference.

What works

Roll-up sides that open to ground level. A ridge vent running the full length. An exhaust fan on a temperature controller set to 28°C. These three things, working together, can keep a greenhouse at manageable temperatures even on hot NZ summer days.

Greenhouse Options from BensGarden

We've built greenhouses specifically around tropical fruit growing in NZ conditions. Three standard sizes — all designed with proper ventilation from the start.

Small greenhouse 🏡

DIY One Tree Hut

Perfect for a single mango or a few smaller plants. Compact, manageable, affordable. Good starting point for first-time greenhouse growers.

6x3.3m greenhouse 🏠

6 × 3.3m Greenhouse

Space for 2-4 mango trees plus other tropicals. Our most popular size for serious home growers. Includes full ventilation design.

21x8m greenhouse 🏭

21 × 8m Greenhouse

Commercial scale. For serious growers with multiple varieties. Full roll-up sides, ridge ventilation, exhaust fan system.
